The College of Public Health Medicine (CPHM), Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, proudly extends its warmest congratulations to Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab on his appointment as the Director-General of Health, effective 29 May 2025. This appointment, endorsed by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, marks a significant leadership transition for Malaysia’s healthcare system.
Dr Mahathar brings extensive expertise and experience to his new role. He holds a Bachelor of Medical Science from the University of St Andrews, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Manchester, and a Master of Emergency Medicine from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Since joining the Ministry of Health in 1996, he has held pivotal positions, including his most recent post as Head of the Emergency and Trauma Department at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

A Trusted Leader for Health System Reform
Dr Mahathar’s clinical leadership and on-the-ground understanding of emergency care will be instrumental as the Ministry continues its journey of health system reform. His appointment comes at a critical juncture where Malaysia is focused on strengthening health service delivery, accessibility, and public trust in healthcare.
